The skincare world is full of advice—some helpful, some not so much. As science and product formulations evolve, it’s time to leave outdated ideas behind for good.
Here are five skincare myths we’re officially saying goodbye to in 2025—and what you should believe instead.
1. Oily Skin Doesn’t Need Moisturizer
Skipping moisturizer won’t make your skin less oily—it might make it more oily. When your skin lacks hydration, it tries to compensate by producing even more oil, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Even oily skin needs moisture, so don’t skip this important step if you want to help keep your skin hydrated and healthy!

2. Pores Open And Close
Pores aren’t tiny doors that can open and shut. Their size is largely determined by genetics, but they can appear larger when they’re clogged or when skin loses elasticity with age. Steam can help loosen debris inside pores, making them easier to clean, but it doesn’t “open” them. That being said, you can keep them from becoming enlarged by using a daily toner to help minimize their appearance!

3. You Only Need Sunscreen On Sunny Days
UV rays are sneaky—they can penetrate through clouds, windows, and even some clothing. Even if it’s cloudy, raining, or you’re indoors near a window, you’re still exposed to UV damage that accelerates aging and increases skin cancer risk. Daily sunscreen (at least SPF 30) is essential, 365 days a year, rain or shine.

4. The More Skincare Steps, the Better
A 10-step skincare routine might look impressive, but piling on too many products can backfire. Overloading your skin increases the risk of irritation, disrupts your natural barrier, and can cause ingredients to clash. A streamlined, targeted routine that meets your skin’s current needs will always deliver better (and safer) results.

5. If It Stings, It Means It’s Working
That burning or stinging sensation isn’t a sign of “deep cleaning”—it’s often a warning that your skin is irritated or being damaged. Some mild tingling might occur with strong actives like exfoliating acids, but actual discomfort should never be brushed off. If it burns, it’s time to wash it off and rethink the product or how you’re using it.

2025 is the year we get smarter about skincare—and that means leaving outdated myths in the past. By staying informed and listening to your skin (instead of outdated advice), you’ll be setting yourself up for healthier, stronger, and more radiant skin all year long. Here’s to skincare that’s actually rooted in reality!
