Dr. Ryan's Mailbag: Is It Too Late To Get Serious About Skincare? Plus More...

Hello, and happy Friday! Dr. Ryan Shelton here, and I’m excited that it’s finally the end of the week, but before we kick off the weekend, I have one order of business - answering two questions from customers who need my help with their skincare concerns! Our first question of the day comes from Hilda in Palm Springs, CA.

Q: Hi Dr. Ryan. I just turned 50 and I have a lot of wrinkles, probably because I’ve never been serious about skincare. Is it too late to start a skincare routine if I haven't been consistent before?

A: Hi Hilda! The notion that it's too late to start getting serious about your skincare routine past a certain age is a myth that I’m going to debunk for you today. It’s never too late to start thinking about your skin! Let’s take a look at a few ways you can get started…

Your skin is a reflection of your overall health and well-being, and investing in its care is a gift you give yourself at any age. Whether you're in your twenties, thirties, forties, or beyond, the benefits of a consistent skincare regimen are life-changing!

The best way to begin is by assessing your skin's needs and goals.

By the sounds of it, you might be a little more focused on getting rid of some wrinkles and fine lines in your complexion.

Tailor your routine accordingly, selecting products with ingredients that target your specific concerns. For example, a great ingredient to get you started on is Retinol.

A lot of people may be nervous about using retinol because it can make your skin a little dry or sensitive, but as long as you’re starting with a beginner-friendly version, you’ll be fine!

Retinol helps to speed up cell turnover, which can help exfoliate the skin and slough off dead skin cells to reveal the glowing complexion underneath!

This in turn will help smooth out wrinkles and create a more youthful appearance.

My store has a couple of beginner-friendly Retinol products that you might like, so give them a shot and see what you think about the results!

Now remember, with any skincare routine consistency is vital. If you want to see those results you’ll need to stick to your daily skincare ritual!

Another ingredient I think will do a world of good for your wrinkles is peptides.

These ingredients help rebuild the lost collagen in your skin, which can help plump wrinkles and iron out fine lines.

My Repair and Release Cream has long been a favorite in my store because of how well the peptides work!

By using both this product and adding some retinol in the mix, I think the transformation in your skin will be quite stunning!

I hope these tips help!

Our next question is from Sophia in Santa Fe, NM.

Q: Hi Dr. Ryan! Should I switch to a more hydrating cleanser? My skin is getting a little dry the older I get.

A: Sophia, this is such an important question because it touches on the changing needs of our skin as we age. As the years pass, it's common for our skin to change, including decreased natural oil production and moisture retention, leading to dryness and dehydration, which is something you’re starting to experience first-hand…

Switching to a more hydrating cleanser can indeed be a beneficial step in fighting dryness and maintaining skin health.

Cleansing is an important step in any skincare routine, but it's essential to choose a cleanser that effectively removes impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils.

Opting for a hydrating cleanser ensures that your skin retains its essential moisture, preventing it from feeling tight or stripped after cleansing.

Look for cleansers formulated with gentle, nourishing ingredients like Lavender oil and tea tree oil, which help clean the skin thoroughly without being too harsh.

These two ingredients are in my Lavender Oil Cleanser, which is a fantastic option for those seeking a gentle yet effective cleanser that protects the skin’s health and keeps it looking its best!

It's formulated to cleanse the skin thoroughly while leaving it feeling soft, supple, and refreshed, and as a bonus, it helps to remove any dry and flaky skin.

Incorporating a hydrating cleanser into your skincare routine is just one piece of the puzzle. It's also essential to follow up with hydrating serums, moisturizers, and other skincare products that lock in moisture and support overall skin health.

Remember, Sophia, the key is to adapt your skincare routine to meet the changing needs of your skin as you age. Embrace the nourishing benefits of a hydrating cleanser, and your skin will thank you with a luminous glow that defies age. Here's to radiant and hydrated skin at every stage of life!
