Dr. Ryan's Mailbag: Is Wearing Makeup Every Day Bad For Your Skin? Plus More...

Hello and welcome to another Mailbag Friday! My name is Dr. Ryan Shelton and if you’re a newcomer, every Friday I answer two questions from customers who need my help with a skincare-related question. My first question comes from Celine in Lewiston, ME.

Q: Hi Dr. Ryan! I wear makeup every day and I want to make sure I’m not hurting my skin. I guess my question is can wearing makeup every day be bad for your skin?

A: Hi Celine! The short answer to your question is no, wearing makeup every day is not going to hurt your skin! BUT…

If you don’t follow these tips, it may end up causing some damage…

Firstly, it’s absolutely essential that you wash your makeup off every single night no matter what.

Sleeping in your makeup will not only cause premature aging, but some people have even developed serious skin conditions - like Rosacea - from not taking good enough care of their skin.

The first thing I want to stress is that you have to make sure you wash your face at the end of each day.

No matter how tired you are and no matter how long the day has been, you need to make sure your skin is healthy if you want to fight premature aging, and it all starts with washing bad bacteria and grime off your face!

My Lavender Oil Cleanser is a great way to end the day because not only is it super calming and relaxing, but it also helps to rinse away dirt and impurities.

On top of that, Lavender oil has been proven to be an antioxidant, which is exactly what you need to fight signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines!

My next tip has more to do with the rest of your skincare routine.

Just rinsing your skin each night won’t be enough. You have to make sure you’re moisturizing your skin too!

Dry skin leads to deeper wrinkles and fine lines, so you’ll need to use a product like my Repair and Release Cream to keep your skin hydrated after you’ve rinsed all the gunk off!

With these tips, you’ll be as prepared as you can be to keep your skin as healthy as possible no matter how much makeup you wear!

Thanks for writing in, Celine!

My next question comes from Raquel in Fort Worth, TX.

Q: Hi Dr. Ryan. I’m so busy nowadays and I have trouble sticking with my skincare routine. Do you have any tips for me?

A: Hi Raquel! I completely understand what it feels like to have a busy routine and not get much time for yourself at the end of each day. This can make your skincare routine seem like a huge task, so it’s important to make sure you’re taking every opportunity to keep it as simple as possible. Let me explain how you can do that…

At the end of a long day, it can be difficult to motivate yourself to stick to a long and complicated nighttime routine.

No matter how much self-discipline you have, eventually, you’re going to give yourself the night off and skip your routine altogether!

While nobody’s perfect, the unfortunate truth is that your results are only going to be as good as your consistency with your routine, so it’s important to do everything you can to ensure you never miss a day.

The perfect way to do that is to stick to the basics.

All you really need to do is rinse off all the gunk on your face and give it some hydration to keep it protected throughout the night.

Try starting with a cleanser like my Lavender Oil Cleanser to get your face fresh and clean. Since it’s a multi-tasking product and it has gentle exfoliating properties, it also helps to get two steps of your routine done in one go!

If you have a little energy and can slip a hydrating and plumping serum like my Collagen Filler Serum into your nighttime skincare routine, by all means, have at it!

If you don’t that’s ok - just slather on some Repair and Release Cream and your skin should be protected and hydrated enough to last until the morning.

And that’s really all you need to give your skin the basic nutrients it needs to stay healthy and happy!

Of course, the more work you put in, the better your results will be, but if you’re busy and don’t have the time, these products should be more than enough!

I hope you get some time to yourself soon, Raquel. Good luck!
