Dr. Ryan's Mailbag: Which Makeup Is Best For Mature Skin? Plus More...

Hello and happy Friday! It’s Dr. Ryan Shelton here, and I’m happy to be back to answer your skincare inquiries. In today's Mailbag, I'm here to address two exceptional questions from customers seeking a touch of expert advice. Our first question comes from Danica in Charleston, SC.

Q: Hi Dr. Ryan. What makeup is best for people with older skin?

A: Hi Danica! This is a fantastic question that resonates with so many looking to enhance their beauty gracefully. Unfortunately, not all makeup will look good on everyone, but I’m here to help you find what will make you look radiant! Let's explore the world of makeup tailored for more mature skin, where choices can make a substantial impact…

As we gracefully age, our skin undergoes a series of transformations, including a decrease in natural oils and elasticity.

This can sometimes lead to dryness, which will only end up looking flaky under makeup.

To help prevent flakiness and dryness, consider makeup products with hydrating ingredients, and avoid makeup with a matte finish.

To take it a step further, you can also keep your skin hydrated with something like my Repair and Release Cream - this will help make sure that your skin stays free from flakes and dryness no matter what makeup you’re wearing!

Next, let’s talk about foundation. A lightweight foundation or tinted moisturizer is an excellent choice for achieving a natural look that enhances your unique beauty.

Steer clear of heavy powders that may settle into fine lines, opting instead for cream-based products for a smoother and more even application.

And for a flawless finish, consider incorporating a hydrating primer into your routine. This not only creates a smooth canvas for makeup but also helps extend its longevity.

This is another place where my Repair and Release Cream would come in handy - it works wonderfully as a primer!

Remember, embracing the beauty that comes with age is the ultimate goal, rather than changing your look completely.

With these tips, you can help enhance your natural beauty and stick to the products that will help emphasize your best features!

Our second question comes from Priya in Denver, CO.

Q: Hi Dr. Ryan. I have milia around my eyes. How do I get rid of them and stop them from coming back?

milia around the eyes

A: Hello, Priya! Milia around the eyes is not fun, especially because they can make you feel like they are the focal point of your face! Don’t worry, Priya. I’m going to help you figure out this skincare problem!

Milia, those tiny white bumps, often result from trapped dead skin cells or excess oil.

They are more common in babies, but the truth is that anyone can get them at any age!

Milia can be caused by a variety of different things, but the best way to solve this problem is to help exfoliate your skin and unclog your pores.

Consider incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your skincare regimen - and don’t overdo it!

Look for products containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) – these ingredients encourage cell turnover, preventing the build-up of dead skin.

If you use something harsh like a scrub, it could end up damaging your skin and making the problem worse, so you want to take it easy with the exfoliation and not cause too much agitation.

My Lavender Oil Cleanser is perfect for this because it contains gentle exfoliants that help get rid of dead skin cells effectively and gently.

Now, when it comes to preventing Milia from staging a comeback, consistency is the name of the game.

Opt for a lightweight eye serum that doesn't congest the delicate pores around your eyes. My Eye Recovery Serum would be great for this!

Ingredients like retinol can also be particularly beneficial in preventing milia formation and promoting healthy skin turnover.

If you want, have a look at the two retinol products in my store. They could help solve your milia problem and great a glowing, radiant complexion!

Remember, Priya, patience is a virtue in skincare. Stay committed to your routine, and those milia will become a distant memory!
