Dr. Ryan's Mailbag: Why Is My Skin So Dull? Plus More...

Hello, and welcome to another Friday Mailbag. My name is Dr. Ryan Shelton and for all the newcomers, I send out a Mailbag every Friday to answer questions from customers who need my expertise when it comes to their skincare concerns. Our first question today comes from Geraldine in Mission Viejo, CA.

Q: Hi Dr. Ryan. My skin has become almost a greyish color and it doesn’t feel very smooth anymore. What's the best way to help this?

A: Hi Geraldine! It sounds to me like you’re dealing with a dull and uneven skin tone, which can be caused by a build-up of dead skin cells. As we age, addressing dullness and unevenness can become more important than ever if you want to achieve a more radiant complexion. Let me show you how you can do just that…

The quickest and easiest fix for you is going to be exfoliation.

Exfoliation is a crucial step in unveiling a brighter complexion because it helps to get rid of any dead skin cells that could be building up, and it encourages the formation of new skin cells.

Incorporate products with gentle exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) into your routine. These ingredients promote cell turnover, revealing fresh, radiant skin.

My Lavender Oil Cleanser has both AHAs and BHAs in it, so using this daily can help reveal that glow of yours that’s waiting to take center stage!

Vitamin C is another stellar addition to combat dullness, and in my Peptide PM Shield, it makes its appearance in a potent ingredient called Ginkgo Biloba.

Ginkgo Biloba is a powerful botanical that has incredible antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which can help create a brighter, more lively appearance.

In the Peptide PM Shield, it helps to enhance your skin's natural glow and boost your radiance, eliminating that dullness and grayish look you were talking about.

Addressing a dull and uneven skin tone is a multifaceted approach and it does require some time and patience, but if you embrace these practices with consistency, you'll be well on your way to unveiling a more radiant complexion!

Our next question is from Laura in Savannah, GA.

Q: Hi Dr. Ryan. Are there specific night creams or serums that work better for mature skin?

A: Hi Laura! I just love it when people ask me questions about nighttime skincare because it’s an area of skincare that doesn’t get enough recognition. Choosing the right night creams or serums can indeed make a substantial difference in supporting mature skin, so I’m going to walk you through a few options that are available to you…

When we sleep, our bodies go into repair mode. This makes it the best time to focus on repairing the damage done to our complexions and strengthening the skin.

For this reason, you’ll want to opt for products with ingredients that promote hydration and collagen production.

To start, you could set your sights on sodium hyaluronate.

This is a wonderful hydrator, helping to plump the skin and diminish the appearance of fine lines.

Next, try adding some peptides to your evening routine.

Peptides are valuable for stimulating collagen synthesis, contributing to skin firmness. One of my personal favorites is Matrixyl 3000, which is ideal for fighting almost all signs of aging.

Both sodium hyaluronate and Matrixyl 3000 are in my Peptide PM Shield, which has been a fan favorite in my store ever since it launched!

This is one of my favorite products because it’s designed especially for your nighttime routine and helps to totally transform your complexion while you sleep.

The night is a prime time for your skin to absorb these nourishing elements and recover from daily stressors, so I think adding it to your routine will be a game-changer!

My last suggestion to you is to consider incorporating retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, which aids in skin renewal.

Retinol is one of the most popular skincare ingredients on the market right now, as you probably know, and for good reason!

It helps to speed up cell turnover, which is one of the root causes of wrinkles and sagging skin.

It’s another one of those ingredients that fight almost all signs of aging, so adding a retinol product along with the Peptide PM Shield will deliver staggering results!

Remember, Laura, the night is your skin's opportunity to regenerate and rejuvenate. Choose products that provide the tender care mature skin deserves, and you'll wake up to a more vibrant and refreshed complexion.

Good luck and keep me updated!
