Hello! My name is Dr. Ryan Shelton and now that it’s Friday, it’s time for another weekly mailbag! All of my most important customers love my mailbags because it gives them a chance to have their biggest skincare questions answered by a professional! My First question this Friday comes from Charlotte in Pittsburgh, PA.
Q: Hi Dr. Ryan! I have been reading a lot recently about something called blue light from computers and phones. People are saying it can cause dark spots… Is that true?
A: Hi Charlotte! Wow, I love this question because I’ve never had it before, but it's a topic that’s becoming more and more popular in the world of skincare. To answer your question, yes - blue light can absolutely cause dark spots on your skin. Don’t worry, though, there are some things you can do to prevent that!
These days nearly everyone has some kind of device they use that exposes them to blue light.
From the computer that I’m typing on as I write my answer to you, to the screen you’re using to read my response - whether it’s a laptop, smartphone or anything else!
While these devices may make our lives a lot easier, the sad truth is that they are also contributing to the breakdown of our skin cells in many different ways.
This means being exposed to blue light is causing your skin to age faster than normal, and that’s especially true when it comes to dark spots.
If you want to help protect your skin from blue light on a daily basis, my professional recommendation is to start using antioxidants like Vitamin C all over your skin.
I love recommending my Dark spot corrector for this job because it has 5 different types of Vitamin C, which can go a long way in helping keep your skin healthy and safe from early signs of aging!
On top of that, it will help fade any spots you already have to help create a more even and clear complexion.
Even if you’re not exposed to a ton of blue light, antioxidants are a great thing to have in your routine for overall health and radiance in your skin.
I for one will never take them out of my own skincare ritual.
I hope this helps, Charlotte. Thanks for asking such an interesting question!
My next question comes from Selena in Fresno, CA
Q: Hello Dr. Ryan! My daughter is getting married in 2 months and I want to get rid of some wrinkles and dryness on my skin before her big day. Do you have any recommendations?
A: Hi Selena! First of all, congratulations to you and your daughter! I am so honoured to be able to help you with some recommendations to get you glowing and ready for the wedding. I have something great in mind for you…
Before we get started, it’s a good thing you asked me this question long before the big event. As a general rule, I don’t recommend starting any new skincare less than a week before any important occasion.
That’s because if your skin reacts poorly to your new product, it needs time to heal and a week usually isn’t long enough!
So whichever products you decide to get started with, make sure you do it as soon as you can so you can see how your skin reacts to it.
Now for your recommendation…
Firstly, I’d recommend sticking to products that are safe for sensitive skin. That way, the chances of having a skin reaction are a bit lower, and you have more time to get some great results!
Next, I think you could benefit from a product with powerful hydrating ingredients as well as peptides.
Both of these things will help minimize your dryness and help reduce the appearance of your wrinkles.
A rich and creamy moisturizer like my Repair and Release Cream could work - it has some powerful peptides to help your skin create more collagen, which will help create a smoother, less wrinkled complexion.
It’s also got ingredients that are safe for sensitive skin, which is a huge plus!
Since your current concerns are only wrinkles and dryness, I’d start off with that and try to keep your skincare routine simple.
After 2 whole months of using the Repair and Release Cream twice daily, you should notice a huge difference and look radiant and glowing, just in time for the wedding!
I hope you and your family have a great time at the wedding, all of us here at South Beach Skin Lab send our best wishes!
