Dr. Ryan's Mailbag: Does Collagen Really Work? Plus More...

Hello! My name is Dr. Ryan Shelton and I’d like to welcome you back to another Mailbag Friday! Every Friday I answer two questions from customers just like you, and this week we have some great questions. My first question comes from Ella in Baltimore, MD.

Q: Hi Dr. Ryan, I read online that putting collagen on your skin isn’t helpful to erase wrinkles. Is that true?

collagen benefits

A: Hi Ella! Collagen is a very important part of our skin’s make-up because it helps our face keep its structure and avoids wrinkles from forming. Many people may think having collagen in your skincare is helpful, but the scientific evidence tells a different story…

The truth is, you’ll have a pretty hard time seeing any results if your skincare products claim to have collagen in them.

That’s because collagen is a pretty large molecule, and it can’t absorb into your skin well enough to make any real difference in your wrinkles.

Instead, you’ll want to try products that have ingredients to stimulate collagen production.

And there are no ingredients that do a better job of that than peptides.

Peptides are easily absorbed into your skin and they tell your body to produce collagen faster.

This means you start to see them helping fade your wrinkles and fine lines, as well as create a more plump and youthful appearance.

I am such a big fan of peptides because of how they’ve proven to be effective time and time again. I love them so much that they’re one of the main ingredients in my Repair and Release Cream!

So next time you see a skincare product that has collagen in it, be weary of it. It may have other benefits, but it sure won’t help your wrinkles start to get less noticeable.

Bye for now!

My next question comes from Sasha in Miami, FL.

Q: Hi Dr. Ryan! Over the past year, I’ve noticed the skin around my neck area beginning to sag, and It makes me very self-conscious. What can I do to make it better?

 get rid of sagging skin

A: Hi Sasha! I completely understand how you’re feeling about the skin around your neck. Aging can make you feel insecure about your appearance, but I have a couple of tips to help you create a more lifted neck area!

Before we get into what kind of products you should be using, let's talk about how to apply a neck cream.

Believe it or not, there is a right and wrong way to apply any skincare product to your neck area. That’s because the skin here is pretty delicate and easily weighed down by gravity.

Most people find it more comfortable to apply their cream in downward strokes, but the truth is that will only pull and tug at your skin, adding to any sagging that is already happening there.

Instead, make sure you're applying your product in gentle, upward strokes. This will help lift your skin into the place you want it to be and it will prevent any further damage that could cause drooping.

Now that we’ve covered the application, let's talk about what kind of ingredients to look out for.

You’re going to need some ingredients that are specifically meant to lift and tighten.

Something like Oat Kernel Extract would make a world of difference, as it helps to tighten sagging skin and get rid of droopiness in your neck area.

Not only is this ingredient naturally derived, but it’s great for the delicate skin around your neck.

That’s why I have it in my Neck Firming Cream! If you're worried about turkey neck and jowls, I think you’d love the results you'd get from this product.

So to sum up my professional advice:

Make sure you’re applying something with Oat Kernel extract, and make sure you use upward strokes!

I have no doubt this will help you feel confident and beautiful in your own skin again, Sasha!
